Earlier this month, Hank Williams Jr. lost a gig with Monday Night Football after going on Fox News to complain about President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner playing a round of golf together. Most of the attention went to the fact that Williams used a Hitler analogy — he said it was as if Adolf Hitler had played golf with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
But the real news, I thought, was that somebody could be outraged that Obama and Boehner had gotten together. I remember when Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill used to play cards. Nobody got furious about that. People actually liked the idea that leaders from different parties could put aside their political differences and socialize.
The whole thing brings to mind a subject Perry broached in April 2009. He suggested that Texas might consider seceding from the union. I thought at the time — and feel more strongly now — that he was on to something.
I don't mean just Texas. I mean the whole red and blue thing.
